The Night Francis Ngannou Almost Shocked Boxing: How a Debutant Dropped Tyson Fury

On 28 October 2023, heavyweight boxing received an extraordinary reminder that reputations do not win fights. Tyson Fury, the undefeated WBC heavyweight champion, entered the ring in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, against former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Fury was an established elite boxer. Ngannou had never competed in a professional boxing match. Ten rounds later, the supposed mismatch had become a genuine controversy.

The third-round shock

Fury initially attempted to establish control through his jab, movement and boxing experience. But Ngannou demonstrated patience, physical strength and an ability to counter. In round three, Ngannou landed a powerful left hook that sent Fury to the canvas. The champion recovered and beat the referee’s count, but the knockdown changed the atmosphere surrounding the contest. Ngannou had done something few expected, and he was proving competitive beyond a single punch.

Ten rounds that divided boxing

As the contest progressed, Fury attempted to regain control with his jab, combinations and movement. Ngannou continued to make the champion uncomfortable, demonstrating defensive awareness, counterpunching and a willingness to engage physically at close quarters. Fury struggled to impose the dominance many had predicted. When the final bell sounded, the judges were divided.

Juan Carlos Pelayo scored the fight 96–93 for Fury. Alan Krebs also favoured Fury, 95–94. Ed Garner scored it 95–94 for Ngannou. Fury retained his unbeaten professional record through a split decision, but the narrow victory generated immediate debate.

Why the fight mattered

The contest challenged assumptions about the competitive gap between elite boxing and mixed martial arts. Ngannou demonstrated that an exceptional athlete with substantial striking experience could compete against an established heavyweight boxer, even without a professional boxing record. That does not establish that MMA fighters generally possess equivalent boxing skills: Ngannou’s individual attributes, preparation and performance were central to what happened.

The performance also transformed Ngannou’s immediate boxing prospects. In March 2024, he faced former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, who knocked him out in the second round. Fury subsequently faced Oleksandr Usyk in May 2024 and lost a split decision in their undisputed heavyweight championship contest. Those later results provide context without erasing Ngannou’s performance in Riyadh.

Historical accuracy: Did Ngannou actually win?

Many viewers believed Ngannou deserved the decision. Others considered Fury’s cleaner work across enough rounds sufficient to justify the official verdict. Both interpretations remain part of the fight’s legacy. But three distinctions matter: Ngannou did not officially defeat Fury; Fury won by split decision. Fury’s WBC heavyweight championship was not at stake. And the third-round knockdown did not automatically decide a contest scored round by round.

The defensible historical conclusion is that Ngannou exceeded expectations and delivered an extraordinarily competitive performance in his professional boxing debut. On 28 October 2023, the supposed mismatch became one of heavyweight boxing’s most discussed contests. Fury retained his unbeaten record, but Ngannou emerged with respect few had anticipated.
